Do you suffer from dry eyes?

Dry eye symptoms aren’t only uncomfortable – they can also drastically affect your day-to-day life. At Kremer Eye Center, we aim to educate patients and prospective patients alike about the treatment methods for this debilitating disorder. Below, we’ve collected some of the most frequently asked questions about dry eye treatment.

  • What are IPL treatments like?

First, the area around the eye is cleansed, and eye shields are applied to the eye area. Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. IPL treatments are accomplished through a hand piece attached to the IPL system. When the pulse of light is administered, there is a momentary sensation that is typically well tolerated.

  • How many treatments will I need?

Treatments are repeated once a month over the course of 4 months, although it is possible that improvement will be seen with one or two treatments.

  • Who is a candidate for IPL treatment?

The best candidates for IPL dry eye treatment are patients with moderate to severe dry eye, or patients suffering from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) or Blepharitis. Patients with rosacea are excellent candidates as well.

Note: IPL is not effective for all skin tones; ask a Kremer doctor for more details.

  • What can I expect following treatment?

Immediately after treatment, the area is cleansed and the patient can return to normal activities. The use of sunblock is recommended on any treated area that may be exposed to the sun.

  • What results can I expect?

After the initial treatment, most patients report some improvement in their symptoms. Studies have shown an objective increase in tear function after each treatment, with the maximum improvement happening after the fourth treatment. Depending on the severity of the situation, some patients may need fewer treatments while others may need more. Patients may need maintenance therapy at least once a year.
