Sometimes your own tears just aren’t enough.
Dry eye is a medical condition of the ocular surface that affects tear production and the quality of your tears. It is one of the most common disorders seen in any eye doctor’s office. Patients with dry eye may complain of stinging, burning, itching, redness, irritation, or discomfort and surprisingly enough — excessive tearing. Vision may be blurred which causes difficulty reading, viewing a computer, watching television or seeing clearly while driving. These symptoms may worsen later in the day.
In the past, this condition has often gone unrecognized and undiagnosed. Patients may have been advised to “home-treat” their uncomfortable symptoms with remedies like artificial tears, warm compresses, lid scrubs, or medicated drops. All of these options treat symptoms, but do not address the underlying problem.
If you experience the following, you may be suffering from dry eye: excessive use of artificial tears or lubrication eye drops; overhead fans irritating your eyes; red or burning eyes; blurry vision that changes when you blink; a sandy, scratchy, or gritty feeling in your eyes; watering or excessive tearing; sore or tired eyes; contact lens discomfort; light sensitivity, mucous secretions, dry mouth, or excessive blinking.
Fortunately, there is a treatment method that can provide relief for those dealing with the discomfort of dry eyes. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is available to target the cause of dry eye and reduce or eliminate symptoms. IPL has helped many patients with dry eye reduce their discomfort and improve their quality of life.
We’re eager to understand your goals, and ready to find a solution that makes you feel and look your very best.
We’re committed to making the most up-to-date technology available to you when you visit Kremer Eye Center.
When treating dry eye, there are options available. The right treatment plan will be customized based on the results of your consultation and these treatment options.
IPL treatments are accomplished through a hand piece attached to the IPL system. When the pulse of light is administered, there is a momentary sensation that is typically well tolerated. Treatments are repeated once a month over the course of 4 months, although it is possible that improvement will be seen with one or two treatments. After the initial treatment, most patients report some improvement in their symptoms. Studies have shown an objective increase in tear function after each treatment, with the maximum improvement happening after the fourth treatment. Depending on the severity of the situation, some patients may need fewer treatments while others may need more. Patients may need maintenance therapy at least once a year. The best candidates for IPL Dry Eye Treatment are patients with moderate to severe Dry Eye, or patients suffering from Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) or Blepharitis. Patients with rosacea are excellent candidates as well. Note: IPL is not effective for all skin tones; ask a Kremer doctor for more details.
